Mother + Daughter

by Jessie Gardner November 15, 2016

This relationship is one of the strongest and most complex bonds in the world.

It is considered one of the most powerful connections in nature that only mothers and daughters understand and share among themselves.

As we dive head first into turkey land and Thanksgiving festivities next week, I’m pouring gratitude on this significant relationship like gravy to a mount o’ mashed potatoes. I’ll be hosting a gratitude workshop with lululemon's sister brand, ivivva, for girls in the 8-14 range and their mothers this weekend so it’s top of mind and heart. My hope is that it might inspire you to give your mom or daughter extra love this Thanksgiving, or at least an extra helping of pumpkin pie.

Dr Christiane Northrup, author of the book Mother-Daughter Wisdom says, “The relationship between a woman and her mother is so powerful, it affects everything from her health and self-esteem to all her other relationships.”

She also says that no other childhood experience is as compelling as a young girl's relationship with her mother. "Each of us takes in at a cellular level how our mother feels about being female, what she believes about her body, how she takes care of her health, and what she believes is possible in life."

There may be stories of wounds and bliss intertwined in this relationship, but now, more than ever, given the recent election and dialogue impacting women, it is critical we build stronger connections as a collective group of mothers and daughters. This relationship, when strong, has the power to guide, inspire, empower, instill confidence, worthiness, and above all teach and love.

It is never too late to mend a broken link (or a broken heart) and strengthen the tie between you and your mother and you and your daughter. The world will be better because of it. Gratitude is the first place to start.

What can you do to honor this connection and express gratitude as you prepare for Thanksgiving? And if you're stuck and need a way to tell her she's magical,I've got just the gift for you to show up with on Thanksgiving.
